Perspectives on drugs in society

The word drugs can mean several things to a lot of people. For one, there is the non-clinical variant (referred to as dangerous drugs or illegal drugs) often abused to get a certain kind of "high". Then, of course, there is the pharmacologic kind of agents or substances that are used by clinicians to manage medical and/or mental diseases or conditions. Pharmacologic drugs may either be of the prescription type or over-the-counter (OTC) or be branded or generic classes. Drugs generally play a key role in society. What complicates a seemingly simple situation is when a substance originally intended for beneficial effects is abused or used inappropriately. Without drugs, man will have no options for treatment of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia or mental conditions such as depression or anxiety (with appropriate medical professional advice). Without drugs such as prophylactic antibiotics, a post-operative course following a surgical procedure may be more predisposed to infection. And without drug abuse, the world will definitely be a better place. As the expression goes, whatever someone's "poison" may be, the choice always falls on him or her. Prudence dictates that knowledge is best and better still, best when the right action emanates from a well-informed state.
