Creative thinking: revving the engine of growth
By Joandapol Philamaguila
Are there times when you face a blank wall and wonder as if all the things that have to be invented have been done, all the nice songs have been composed already, and most major technological innovations have been made before your time? Certainly, this thought may have crossed your minds at some time or another. Yet we continue to see advances everyday. From better cell phones, to new car models, to all kinds of advances, all indicating that man is active in harnessing his creative skills. It all becomes clearer that nature is a prolific storehouse of ideas and that man is empowered when he or she is able to conceptualize, analyze, synthesize, and harness them. Creativity can be expressed in various planes and as it has been said that "If it can be thought, it can be written (or filmed, or expressed in whatever is the chosen media)" our focus will be on creative writing. While creative writing can both be easy and hard at the same time, there are essential elements to the exercise, including inspiration, resources, and the medium. Although downplayed to a single digit percentage in the overall scheme of things (as in the Thomas Edison quote of "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration), no one can deny that sometimes inspiration can be the most difficult 1% to obtain. Having a commanding or impeccable mastery of a language does help, but fortunately there are other resources that one can turn to, including dictionaries (online or hardbound), textbooks, and other bodies of knowledge available in various media. Writing is the microcosm of the internal and external milieu of an individual and depending on the form can include real and imagined components culled from experiences both actual and vicarious. In the internet era, aside from being exposed to new technologies such as Web 2.0 applications and more, the rapid pace of communication has also contributed to an exponential rise in the use and/or adoption of new words. Neologisms are always fun and can be seen as a collective "sounding board" of emerging trends. For example, richness and opulence are fine aspirations for most, hence one of my favorites is "opulential". And, though it is not yet an election year, another popular word especially in the Philippine political landscape genre, is "presidentiable" to characterize someone who is not just of presidential timber but more preferably so as someone truly able to perform the functions of the office to its best potential. I just checked dictionary.com today (the third Saturday of March 2009) and these 2 words as of yet showed no matching entries. Perhaps after reading this article, you would also be motivated to write your own stuff and thus revving the engine of your growth. This is an on-going process and your writings may range from an opusculum (minor or petty work) to an opus of grand proportions. And you may just follow the footsteps of writers like Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, Guy de Maupassant, Edgar Allan Poe, and Joseph Conrad, who all left their imprints via their masterpieces that showcased their mastery of the written word.
