Ancestors tale: from east to west and more
By Joandapol Philamaguila
Where we are today is the endproduct and the culmination of the work of many before us, especially our specific ancestors. Ancestry may have several layers of definition, but the most obvious one is that which connotes direct inter-generational lineage that may again vary by the limiting parameter of race, kin, or immediate family. In our family's case, my initial brush with genealogic details came from our maternal grandmother who loved to tell stories of how she and her siblings rode in a boat from the southern part of Mainland China to the northern part of the Philippine island of Luzon. But then my Grandma's story takes us only about 2 generations back, in the process establishing a Chinese heritage in what I had originally perceived was a mainly native Malay background. But then again, isn't it the Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal had also a kind of multi-ethnic mix of ancestry (ie, Chinese, Hispanic, and perhaps even Japanese) aside from his Malay genes? The point is unless one were living in the isolated hinterlands, chances are more likely for somebody to have a mixed background consistent with the history of the island nation itself which has been thru various phases of influence based on history,eg, the times of Rajah Soliman in Manila and Rajah Humabon in Cebu (as part of the then Sri Visayan empire). But back again to our own family's ancestors' tale. The story becomes more complicated when additions to the family tree grow in numbers, with of course the resultant branches of the family tree. Suffice it to say that a great part of our family tree migrated to lands in the Western hemisphere, especially the United States and Canada. And this is the Western part of our heritage. Aside from my own story, it is certain that the bigger ancestors' tale would be your own. Prior to the internet age, genealogic research entailed a much more rigorous, more expensive, and time-consuming process. The internet has definitely accelerated the search for determining one's lineage. However, verification of some information may still compel actual inspection or evaluation of any supporting documentation. Nonetheless, the process has undergone much improvement. Hence, that should be one less excuse to finding out what it is that you are made of, or better still, who your ancestors are. The only other thing, of course, is up to what level will you go?
